What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data displayed in the comment form as well as the visitor’s IP address and user agent string to help detect spam messages.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also known as a hash value) may be sent to the Gravatar service to determine whether you are registered there. The privacy policy for the Gravatar service is available at https://automattic.com/privacy/. Once your comment has been approved, your profile picture will be publicly displayed along with your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images where the EXIF data includes GPS location data. Visitors to the site can download and retrieve all positioning data from images on the site.

Cookie files

If you leave a comment on our website, you can choose to save your name, email address and website address in cookie files. This is for your convenience so that you don’t have to fill in these details again the next time you write a comment. These cookies are valid for one year.

If you have an account and log in to this website, we will create a temporary cookie file to check whether your browser accepts cookies. This cookie file contains no personally identifiable information and disappears when you close your browser.

In addition, when you log in, we will create several cookie files to store information about your login and your screen layout choices. Cookies for login are valid for two days and cookies for layout selection are valid for one year. If you tick “Remember me”, your cookie will remain for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookie files will be deleted.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie file will be stored in your browser. This cookie file does not contain any personal data, but only the post ID of the article you just edited. It is valid for 1 day.

How long we keep your data

If you post a comment, the comment and its metadata will be saved indefinitely. The reason for this is that we need to be able to find and approve follow-up comments automatically and not queue them for review.
